ANCHORAGE, Alaska A new initiative called Rifles in the Wild is introducing Alaskan youth to the combined disciplines of firearm safety, marksmanship, and conservation ethics. Organized by a coalition of hunting guides, shooting instructors, and wildlife agencies, the program takes participants into the backcountry for immersive multi-day training. Youth participants learn to safely handle bolt-action rifles, develop marksmanship fundamentals, and understand the ethical considerations of hunting in Alaskas diverse landscapes. Instruction is coupled with lessons on wildlife management, habitat preservation, and outdoor survival skills. Organizers say the programs goal is to foster a generation of responsible firearm owners who value both marksmanship and conservation. We want these kids to leave with more than just shooting skills we want them to understand their role in sustaining the land and wildlife, one instructor noted.
