In a recent incident on October 18, Galax Police Officer Kelby Edwards observed a vehicle with expired tags in the 100 block of Madison Street which prompted a traffic stop. During the stop, the driver, identified as 39-year-old Ellis Reeves of Galax, produced a valid drivers license and a concealed carry permit. While checking the vehicle, Officer Edwards noted further violationsthere was no inspection sticker and the vehicle lacked a front plate. Upon questioning, Reeves disclosed that there was a firearm in the car, which was then safely removed by Cpl. Tyler Garcia for officer safety. It was also discovered that the vehicle was uninsured, leading officers to call for a tow truck. As the interaction unfolded, Reeves exited the vehicle and consented to a search of his person. This search yielded a container with a crystal substance suspected to be methamphetamine, along with loose pills and a glass pipe that also tested positive for meth. As a result, Reeves was taken into custody on charges of felony possession of a Schedule I or II substance. Additional items, including another container of pills, were located in the vehicle during a routine inventory check prior to towing. Reeves faced multiple charges, including two misdemeanors for possession of controlled substances and a felony charge for possession of a firearm while under the influence of illegal substances, alongside several traffic violations.
