The Barrett M468, introduced in the mid-2000s, was an ambitious attempt to bring 6.8 SPC into mainstream military consideration. Built on the AR platform, it featured a 16-inch barrel optimized for 6.8x43mm, a VLTOR stock, and Barrett-designed upper. Despite strong performance in terminal ballistics and barrier penetration, adoption lagged due to logistical inertia and NATOs reliance on 5.56mm. The rifle found limited use in specialized units but never achieved widespread issue.
