Ben Hill County hunter overcomes medical challenges and shoots two magnificent bucks.
📅
✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Douglas, GeorgiaIn the heart of Ben Hill County, Georgia, deer hunting season took on a special significance for Walker Smith this year. At just 19 years old, Walker faced significant medical challenges that nearly kept him from hunting altogether. As a child, a terrible ATV accident threatened not only his mobility but also his passion for hunting. Despite enduring numerous surgeries and a lengthy recovery, he defied the odds once again this season, taking two impressive bucks.
Walker’s journey back to hunting began after he survived a life-altering accident at the age of 12. The crash had left him with a mangled leg and resulted in 12 surgeries that lasted nearly two years. As he reflects on that period, Walker says, “I almost lost my leg. The doctors told me if we had been 15 minutes later to the hospital, they would have amputated my leg.” However, he didn’t let the experiences define him.
Fast forward to June 2025, and Walker was once again faced with a medical issue—this time requiring significant surgery around his chest. The thought of missing out on the hunting season was overwhelming. “I didn’t think I was going to hunt this season at all,” he admits. It wasn’t until October that he received the green light from doctors to go hunting again.
Come mid-October, preparations were underway. Walker's father, Hugh Smith, had recently acquired a sprawling 340-acre hunting property. It offered not just an expansive wildlife habitat, but also a new beginning for Walker, who captured the attention of a one-eyed 8-point buck residing there.
On October 27, adorned with a Redneck Blinds shooting house that protected him from the elements, Walker’s wait was finally over. Using his 7mm PRC rifle and a Vortex scope, he successfully took the one-eyed buck. It was a moment of triumph after a season that almost didn’t happen. However, this wasn’t the end of his success. What followed was an even greater challenge as Walker set his sights on a coveted 158-class buck he had been tracking through the season.
Determination and skill played crucial roles as Walker encountered the elusive deer over nine days. Just when it appeared that the opportunity had slipped away, fate intervened. On October 29, he returned once more to the spot of his previous success, now filled with anticipation and excitement. When the big buck finally revealed itself, taking the perfect shot felt almost like destiny.
What transpired afterward was a flurry of emotions—nervous moments filled with uncertainty as he searched for signs of a successful hit. With the help of Dan Wise, a seasoned deer tracker and his trusty tracking dog, Walker’s anxiety turned to joy as they located the massive buck.
“Finding that deer was one of the biggest reliefs of my life,” Walker exclaimed upon seeing the impressive rack. His expectations of his buck's size were far exceeded; it ended up being much larger than initially thought, coming in at an impressive score. His father and a friend assisted with the scoring, which suggested it might challenge the county's record.
This season of hunting has illustrated a dramatic turnaround for Walker, who meekly considered he might not even be able to participate in such cherished experiences again. His ability to heal and participate in two successful hunts was euphoric, providing him not just meat for the freezer but a family memory to be cherished.
As hunting season continues, Walker’s journey symbolizes resilience in the face of adversity—a reminder that passion and determination can overcome even the greatest of obstacles. His story resonates with many who have faced personal struggles, proving that it’s never too late to recover and return to the things you love. Walker said, “To go through my medical condition and to be healed so fast, it was surreal.”
ShoQ's Take: Walker Smith's story is more than just about hunting; it highlights the indomitable human spirit. Early reports from hunters suggest that perseverance and a clear focus can often lead to rewarding outcomes. His experiences signal to the hunting community that recovery is not only possible but can lead to incredible moments shared with family and friends. Smith’s journey emphasizes the importance of adaptive hunting techniques and community support in overcoming personal challenges. As we continue through the hunting season, his successes remind us that every hunt has the potential to create lasting memories, even in the face of adversity.
