(WJAR) — Just weeks before the start of the spring semester, Brown University is taking significant steps to enhance campus safety in light of a tragic shooting incident. On December 13, a shooting on campus resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others, prompting immediate action from the university’s administration.
Interim Vice President for Public Safety, Hugh Clements, who previously served as the chief of Providence police, announced a series of new safety measures. He emphasized the importance of creating a secure environment, stating, “What happened on Dec. 13 should never happen again — at Brown or anywhere — and we must confront that imperative for our community with steadfast purpose.”
In response to the crisis, the university is installing additional security cameras, particularly at the Barus and Holley Engineering Building, which was the site of the shooting. These cameras will serve as both a deterrent to future incidents and a means of monitoring campus activity. Furthermore, to increase security at campus buildings, all students and faculty members will now be required to use key cards for entry, and assigned officers will be positioned at buildings without this access technology until the transition is complete.
Additionally, Brown plans to enhance its emergency blue light phone and camera systems and introduce more panic buttons across the campus. In addressing the psychological impacts of such violence, university officials are also increasing mental health resources and implementing public safety training. This will include safety and active shooter preparedness training for the upcoming spring semester.
Clements reiterated a vision centered on community involvement and vigilance, stating, “Our goal is not to create a campus defined by fear, but one defined by preparedness, vigilance, and mutual care.” The administration is dedicated to ensuring that every member of the Brown community — including students, faculty, staff, and visitors — can engage in their academic pursuits with confidence in their safety.
To further bolster these efforts, Brown has engaged external firms to conduct a thorough review of their safety protocols and to assess the overall preparedness of their security systems. These reviews will be pivotal in identifying areas for improvement and incorporating best practices to enhance campus security parameters.
With the spring semester beginning on January 21, the university is racing against time to implement these measures effectively. The outcomes of these advancements could set a precedent for how institutions handle campus safety in the wake of violence.
The proactive response from Brown University highlights a critical shift towards prioritizing security and mental wellness in educational environments. This incident underscores an increasing trend of integrating technology in safety protocols, yet it raises questions about the adequacy of existing measures across all campuses. While many institutions are adopting similar frameworks in response to violence, broader discussions must occur regarding the balance between security and the open, welcoming nature of academic life. The evolving landscape of campus safety is one that warrants continued vigilance and adaptation — both in policy and in community mindset.
