✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Sacramento, CASACRAMENTO, Calif. Governor Gavin Newsom has signed into law a measure that expands Californias red flag gun seizure provisions, allowing a wider range of individuals to petition courts to temporarily remove firearms from people considered a threat to themselves or others. Previously, only immediate family members and law enforcement officers could request a gun violence restraining order (GVRO). Under the new law, co-workers, employers, and school officials may also file petitions. The legislation, Assembly Bill 2910, comes amid rising use of GVROs in the state, with proponents arguing that expanding petition authority will close gaps in early intervention efforts. Critics, including some gun rights advocates, contend that the broadened scope could lead to abuse of the system and infringe on due process rights. Supporters counter that the measure includes safeguards such as judicial review, evidence requirements, and penalties for false or malicious filings. Californias GVRO framework, in place since 2016, has been viewed as a model for other states considering similar laws.
