The suspect, later identified as 20yearold Wess Val Roley, ignited the blaze to draw emergency crews into a kill zone. Shortly after 2 p.m. PDT, arriving engines were met with shotgun fire slung with rifled slugs. Battalions Chief Frank Harwood (42) and Chief John Morrison (52) were fatally struck; Engineer David Tysdal (47) sustained critical chest and spinal injuries and remains hospitalized in stable condition. The incident triggered a multijurisdictional law enforcement response involving over 300 personnel, including FBI negotiators, ATF ballistics teams, and SWAT. The suspects body was located around 7:40 p.m. in a selfinflicted gunshot scene near the fireline. Investigators recovered a 12gauge shotgun and .22 rifle; additional evidenceincluding a deleted Instagram story, flintstarter fire ignition, and prepared sitepoint to premeditation. Containment efforts faced delays due to the gunfire; evacuation protocols for responders were updated following the event.
