Odisha Police Launches 7-Month Cybercrime Investigation Training Program

In a significant move to strengthen its capabilities in combating cybercrime, the Odisha Police have announced a comprehensive seven-month training program that will enhance the cybercrime investigative skills of its officers. The initiative, scheduled to run from September 2025 to March 2026, will involve over 3,200 law enforcement personnel, including 200 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), 600 inspectors, 1,200 sub-inspectors, 1,200 assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs), as well as judicial officers and public prosecutors. This targeted initiative aims to equip officers with the advanced skills needed to deal with increasingly sophisticated cybercrimes. The training will take place across seven different locations in Odisha: Cuttack, Angul, Sambalpur, Rourkela, Balasore, Berhampur, and Koraput. The police department has carefully structured the program to ensure hands-on, practical learning by limiting class sizes to 25 participants per batch. This intimate setting will allow for deeper engagement with case studies, live demonstrations, and the use of real-world forensic tools, enhancing the officers' ability to handle the complexities of cybercrime investigations. The curriculum is designed to be comprehensive, covering multiple aspects of cybercrime investigations. Topics will include financial fraud detection, the use of call detail record analysis, IP data analysis, the application of cyber laws, and social media monitoring. Officers will also be trained in the latest digital forensics techniques to help uncover evidence of online fraud, hacking, and other cybercrimes. This curriculum is carefully designed to ensure that officers understand both the technical aspects of cybercrime and the legal frameworks that govern digital investigations. Director General of Police (DGP) Y B Khurania emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that cybercrime is one of the fastest-growing threats in today's digital age. With the increasing reliance on technology and the internet for personal, financial, and business activities, the potential for cybercrimes has escalated dramatically. The DGP highlighted that law enforcement must evolve and adapt to this new form of criminal activity, which often requires specialized knowledge and skills not typically included in standard police training. The program will be led by experts in cybercrime, digital forensics, and cybersecurity, who will provide law enforcement officers with the latest tools, strategies, and legal insights needed to combat these emerging threats. The program's primary goal is to ensure that officers are not only capable of handling complex cybercrime cases but also equipped to respond quickly and effectively in high-pressure situations. The Odisha Police's new training initiative also reflects a broader trend in law enforcement worldwide. As technology continues to evolve and cybercrimes become more sophisticated, police forces are increasingly prioritizing cybercrime investigations in their training programs.
