Rhode Island Hosts Educational Workshops on Coyotes, Firearm Safety, and Clamming
📅
✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Rhode IslandAs the summer winds down, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is offering a variety of workshops for those interested in wildlife, gun safety, and outdoor recreation. Notable events include a free workshop by the Narragansett Bay Coyote Study to educate locals on how to coexist with coyotes, scheduled for Thursday, September 4, at the Clark Memorial Library. This workshop will explore the behaviors of coyotes and provide valuable advice on managing their presence, especially when they become a nuisance by denning under decks or feeding on livestock. For firearm enthusiasts, the Tiverton Rod and Gun Club will be hosting a two-day firearm safety and hunting ethics course on September 6-7. This course is aimed at beginners, providing foundational knowledge of firearm safety, hunting regulations, and ethical practices in the field. The course combines classroom instruction with hands-on training, ensuring that participants leave with a comprehensive understanding of safe firearm usage and responsible hunting. A certificate will be awarded upon completion, which is required for obtaining a hunting license in Rhode Island. In addition to these, the club will also offer a free day of shooting at the Great Swamp Range on October 18, where visitors can try out muzzleloading firearms in preparation for the upcoming muzzleloader season. This event will offer one-on-one instruction from experienced staff, allowing shooters to gain confidence with their weapons in a supportive environment. For those interested in saltwater fly fishing, a workshop is scheduled for September 27 on the Narrow River in Narragansett. This class, which includes lunch and expert instruction, is open to families with children ages 12 and up. It will cover everything from fly fishing techniques to gear selection, helping participants learn the basics of this popular outdoor sport. Another exciting offering is the youth-focused waterfowl hunt, scheduled for October 25. This event, organized by the Tiverton Rod and Gun Club in partnership with Ducks Unlimited and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, will offer a chance for young hunters to gain hands-on experience in the field. Before the hunt, a cookout and orientation will take place on October 4, where parents and children can prepare for the experience together. These events highlight the diverse outdoor opportunities available to Rhode Island residents, from learning about local wildlife and conservation efforts to gaining the skills necessary for responsible hunting and firearm use. They also showcase the state's commitment to educating the public on safe firearm practices and the responsible management of natural resources.
