Driftwood Outdoors: Whitetail rut roars on with firearms season approaching
📅
✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Camden County, MissouriAs the firearms season approaches across the Midwest, hunters are eagerly preparing for what is expected to be a thrilling time in the woods. Bowhunters and youth hunters have already made significant catches this season, demonstrating a notable increase in mature bucks due to improved management practices over the last two decades. The recent Youth Firearms Season in Missouri, which occurred on November 1-2, highlighted this trend, as many big bucks were harvested, showcasing the dedication and skill of young hunters. Fifteen-year-old Hadley Lane from Camden County made the most of his chance during the youth season. He successfully harvested a deer and, impressively, documented the experience himself. "I was sitting with my 13-year-old niece, Lilly," said his father, Josh Lane, an experienced hunter himself. "Hadley was a couple of hundred yards away, and I told him to look out for the Big 8 that we had several daylight pictures of. After I heard him shoot, I received a text saying the Big 8 was down. He gutted it himself, and he self-filmed the entire thing. I take pride in my boys' love for hunting, and I know that experiencing youth seasons plays a crucial role in fostering their passion." Interestingly, Hadley noted the lack of big bucks actively chasing does, even though he knows they are present. The early signs of the rut appeared to be less intense than hoped this year, with younger bucks seen running around but without much successful mating behavior. Down in southeast Kentucky, just outside West Liberty, Realtree photographer Bill Konway is observing a different scenario. With hundreds of acres at his disposal, hes excited about the deer activity on his property. Konway remarked, Theyre rutting pretty good already. It feels like the rut has turned on earlier this year, and Im noticing more bucks than usual coming through. There appears to be an aggressive rut taking place this fall. To the east, a vast expanse of the Daniel Boone National Forest enhances hunting opportunities. The Modern Gun Season in Kentucky runs from November 8-23, and hunters across the state are gearing up to take advantage of the ideal conditions. In northwest lower Michigan near Traverse City, Ken Kirsch and his family continue a cherished tradition of annual deer camps. Kirsch reported, Every year, the deer hunting seems to improve and this year is no exception. Early on, we focused on filling our freezers with does, but now the tide has shifted toward buck hunting. The rut is definitely in full swing. I watched an 8-pointer running does all morning, which was a stark contrast to just a week ago when it was much quieter. Hunters across the Midwest are expressing excitement regarding the deer activity this season. Bill Winke, who shared insights from Iowa, believes this years rut is one of the most visible he has seen in a long time, further reinforcing optimism across the hunting community. While firearms seasons are still around a week away in many states, now presents the most exhilarating time of the year to be in the woods. If you have vacation days left or are considering a strategic call-in for a sick day, now is the time to take advantage of this prime hunting opportunity. In summary, as the hunting community gears up for what looks to be an exciting firearms season filled with vigorous rutting activity, it's a crucial time to engage in these experiences with our youth and cultivate the next generation of responsible hunters.
