DURHAM, NC Tiera McArthur, a 26-year-old mother from Durham, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter following the tragic shooting death of her 4-year-old son, Kamarii Patterson. On June 23, police responded to a shooting report at a residence on North Briggs Avenue, discovering Kamarii suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Initial investigation indicates the shooting was accidental; the child accessed an unsecured firearm inside the home. Over a month later, McArthur was arrested and charged in connection to her son's death and was also served a warrant for failure to appear in another jurisdiction. She was released on a $50,000 secured bond. This incident underscores the critical importance of safe firearm storage to prevent accidental shootings, especially involving children.
