✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Erie County, New YorkIn advance of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, Erie County Clerk Michael P. Kearns has announced that Old County Hall will be illuminated green through November 11 as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide initiative dedicated to honoring and supporting military veterans. This initiative serves as a vivid reminder of the unique challenges many veterans encounter after their service, as well as the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist them and their families. The program, spearheaded by the National Association of Counties, encourages residents, businesses, and community organizations to participate by changing one light bulb whether indoors or outdoors to a green one. By shining a green light, we let our veteran community and their families know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported, Kearns stated, emphasizing the simple yet impactful action that individuals can take to show their solidarity with veterans. Beyond this visual tribute, the Erie County Clerks Office has a history of supporting veterans through programs such as the Thank-A-Vet Discount Card Program. Veterans who choose to file their DD-214 discharge papers with the Clerks Office are eligible for a complimentary card that provides discounts at over 1,400 local businesses, reinforcing the community's support for those who served. In 2021, Clerk Kearns took additional steps to enhance the Thank-A-Vet card by incorporating life-saving crisis support numbers on the back, including those for Crisis Services and the Veterans Crisis Line. This accessibility ensures that veterans and their families can readily obtain the immediate and confidential assistance they need, 24/7. The significance of these efforts cannot be understated. According to data from the organization Stop Soldier Suicide, it is estimated that around 140,000 veterans have tragically lost their lives to suicide since 2001, with more than 6,000 veterans dying each year. This troubling statistic highlights the ongoing crisis within the veteran community and the urgency for comprehensive support systems to aid their reintegration into civilian life. With Erie County boasting one of the highest veteran populations in New York State, Clerk Kearns advocates relentlessly for enhanced measures to assist veterans during their transition. We must do everything we can to support their transition to civilian life and to prevent suicide in the veteran community, Kearns remarked, noting the essential nature of community engagement in this combat against mental health issues. The visual element of the green light serves not only as a symbol but also as a call to action for the community to recognize and support the challenges that veterans face. Supporters are encouraged to share their participation on social media, increasing awareness and fostering community dialogue around veteran issues. If you or someone you know is struggling, resources are available 24/7. Veterans can call or text the Veterans Crisis Line at 988 and press 1 to connect with a qualified Department of Veterans Affairs responder. Local support can also be accessed by contacting Crisis Services at 716-834-3131, or through text at 716-300-2338. Overall, Operation Green Light serves as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility we hold to care for our veterans. Engaging in this program demonstrates that their sacrifices are recognized and respected, and that ongoing support for mental health and reintegration services is critical.
