FRESNO, Calif. Former Fresno police sergeant Donald Dinnell has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of DUI and possession of a controlled substance, ending a high-profile case that raised questions about accountability within law enforcement. The charges stem from an incident in which Dinnell allegedly used fentanyl and methamphetamineconfiscated from a suspectbefore crashing his squad car into a tree. Originally charged with robbery and felony drug possession, Dinnell's charges were later reduced. His sentence includes 20 days in an adult offender work program and a 'Watson Advisement,' which warns that any future DUI-related fatality could result in murder charges. The Fresno County DAs Office pushed for a steeper sentence, citing abuse of public trust. While legal experts say the sentence is within the norm for first-time misdemeanor DUI cases, critics argue that public officials should be held to a higher standard. Dinnell no longer works with the Fresno Police Department and is not expected to return to law enforcement.
