Sheriffs deputies say the break-in occurred just after 1:30 a.m., when the suspect forced entry through a rear door. Awakened by the noise, the homeowner retrieved his firearm and confronted the man in the hallway. The suspect, reportedly unarmed but advancing aggressively, ignored repeated commands to leave. The homeowner fired one shot into the floor as a warning, which halted the suspect long enough for the resident to hold him at gunpoint until deputies arrived. The suspect, a 27-year-old man with prior burglary convictions, was arrested without further incident. No one was injured, and the sheriffs office commended the homeowners restraint and adherence to safe gun-handling principles. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd noted that the outcome could have been far worse for the suspect had he continued his advance. This is Florida. You break into someones home here, youre likely to meet an armed citizen, Judd said.
