GBI Probes Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting of Armed Man in McDuffie County

According to preliminary findings, deputies responded to a domestic-disturbance 911 call reporting that Grosswho had prior felony convictionswas intoxicated and threatening family members with a pump-action shotgun. Arriving units attempted verbal de-escalation for nearly ten minutes, ordering Gross to drop the weapon; body-worn camera footage allegedly shows him chambering a round and leveling the shotgun toward deputies. When he advanced, two deputies fired a total of five rounds from department-issued 5.56 mm patrol rifles, striking Gross in the torso. He was pronounced dead at University Hospital in Augusta. No deputies were injured. The incident marks the regions third law-enforcement shooting in two weeks, following separate confrontations in neighboring Aiken County and Columbia County. Per Georgia protocol, the deputies have been placed on administrative leave while the GBI conducts an independent investigation; findings will be turned over to the Toombs Judicial Circuit District Attorney. Sheriff Logan Marshall said the agency will release body-cam footage within 30 days.
