Georgia Investigators Track Surge in Firearms Sales Through Social Media
Online platforms fueling unregulated gun transactions, police warn
📅
✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Atlanta, GAATLANTA, Ga. Law enforcement agencies in Georgia are sounding alarms over a spike in firearms sales conducted through social media platforms, often without background checks or proper transfer records. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) says these transactions have become a growing source of crime guns recovered in recent months. GBI agents report that sellers are using encrypted messaging apps, private groups, and online marketplaces to arrange in-person exchanges. Many sales involve cash transactions in parking lots or other public spaces, making them difficult to track. Officials add that while some transactions may be legal under state law, they can still facilitate transfers to prohibited individuals. Investigators have linked several recent shootings to firearms purchased through such online arrangements, underscoring the risks of unregulated private sales. The GBI is working with federal partners to identify sellers who are engaged in repeated, large-scale transactions that may constitute illegal dealing without a license.
