ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) The Gun Violence Prevention Commission recently held a meeting to discuss the current state of gun-related crime statistics in the City of Roanoke. Year-to-year comparisons indicate minimal change in overall crime trends; however, the city boasts a commendable 50% reduction in gun-related incidents since 2023. This commendable statistic is a source of hope but also suggests the necessity for continued vigilance and proactive measures. Roanoke experienced one additional gun-related homicide compared to the previous year, but noted three fewer aggravated assaults. This initiative currently serves 29 clients, offering them life skills training and guidance to promote better decision-making. Encouragingly, Rabbi Cohen reported that for the past two years, none of these individuals have been involved in or affected by gun violence. Roanoke Police Deputy Chief Adam Puckett responded, stressing the urgency for community advocacy towards legislative changes to impose severe consequences for negligent adults. Councilman Phazhon Nash addressed the gathering, encouraging them to communicate with their representatives ahead of the upcoming General Assembly session in Richmond. He highlighted the commitment of Delegate Sam Rasoul, Delegate Joe McNamara, and Senator David Suetterlein to address gun violence legislatively.
