Hillsdale College operates as a distinguished private liberal arts institution that has established itself as a leader in shooting sports education through its world-renowned John Anthony Halter Shooting Sports Education Center. Through the Halter Shooting Sports Education Center, Hillsdale College promotes the responsible and disciplined use of firearms in shooting sports for all ages by teaching fundamental safety and marksmanship; trains youth and collegiate athletes to compete at the highest levels; fosters intelligent patriotism, self-governance, and citizenship through teaching the U.S. Constitution. The college combines traditional liberal arts education with comprehensive shooting sports programs, creating a unique educational environment that emphasizes constitutional principles, citizenship development, and competitive excellence in firearms training. The Hillsdale College John Anthony Halter Shooting Sports Education Center began as an old gravel pit that the school purchased in 2006 with a grant from one of its donors who wanted the college to start a shooting program. Now, nearly two decades later with about $30 million invested, it has grown to become one of the best competitive shooting venues in the country. Located about 4 miles from the Hillsdale College main campus in South Central Michigan, the Halter Shooting Center sits on 113 acres. The facility has five bunker trap fields, eight American trap fields, four skeet fields that are combination international or American, a 23-station sporting clays course, a heated five-stand range and an archery range. The center serves both college students and the general public, providing comprehensive shooting education and training opportunities. Hillsdale College's shooting sports programs have achieved remarkable competitive success at national and international levels. Hillsdale College's shotgun team is a co-ed varsity athletic program that started during the 2011-2012 school year. In that first year, the team won the Association of College Unions International Collegiate Clay (ACUI) Target Division III National Championship. It repeated this accomplishment in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2021. The Hillsdale Action Shooting Team earned several accolades at the 2024 Scholastic Action Shooting Program's College Nationals, conducted at the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park in Talladega, Alabama, March 8-10, securing a first-place finish in the Centerfire Pistol Optic division. These achievements demonstrate the college's commitment to excellence in competitive shooting sports. In 2019, Hillsdale College became the official home of the USA Shooting National Team. Through this partnership, the Halter Center serves as host for the Junior Nationals in rifle, both Junior and Senior Nationals in International Skeet and Trap, International Paralympic Grand Prix events, Olympic training camps, Junior World training camps, and Junior Olympic Development Camps. This partnership positions Hillsdale College at the forefront of American shooting sports development and provides students and community members access to world-class training and competition opportunities. The Halter Center offers comprehensive educational programs that extend beyond basic marksmanship training. Prior experience is not required for enrollment in shooting sports classes. Each student, however, is required to take Intro to Shooting Sports, regardless of skill level. In this class, instructors teach the National Rifle Association's home safety course, history of firearms, firearms laws, and basic marksmanship. Hillsdale is unique by complementing shooting education with classes and seminars on constitutional rights. This integrated approach combines practical firearms training with constitutional education, creating well-rounded participants who understand both the technical and civic aspects of firearms ownership and use.
