✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍East TexasIn the world of hunting, there are stories that resonate, stories that share the thrill of victory and the lessons taught by defeat. Recently, during an outing with seasoned outdoorsmen, the topic of unforgettable hunting experiences came up, bringing forth a wealth of anecdotes that speak to the heart of every hunter's journey. One particularly riveting account was recounted by renowned outdoor figure Larry Weishuhn, who has traversed the globe in pursuit of big game. Larry shared a memorable hunting escapade involving a challenging 800-yard shot on a Coues deer buck. With his trusty rifle and Hornady ammunition, he executed a near-perfect shoot after an initial miss. "I don't recommend taking such shots unless you're extremely practiced, like I was that day," Larry stated, illustrating both his confidence and the importance of preparation in the field. Reflecting on missed opportunities, Larry also shared a humorous memory of a failed shot at a buck within 20 yardsa striking example of how even experienced hunters can get rattled when the moment is upon them. As he put it, I just got rattled when he came charging out of the brush. This candid admission serves as a reminder that hunting involves both skill and spontaneous excitement. As the conversation flowed, I took a moment to revisit my own early hunting stories. One particular incident involved an armadillo that had taken to destroying our yard. Armed with a single-shot .22 rifle, I crept up on the creature and, in what could only be described as a stroke of luck, made an impressive shot just before it disappeared into the safety of our home. The confidence I gained from that successful kill at such a young age was a turning point in my development as a hunter. Many years later, additional training came at the hands of the Marine Corps, where I honed my rifle skills significantly. While my luck with the armadillo was a moment of beginner's fortune, the structured training instilled a deeper understanding of shooting mechanics, skill development, and patience. Further unforgettable tales emerged, including a recent hunt with friend Jeff Rice on his ranch in east Texas. With deer already in the freezer, we turned our attention to squirrel huntinga target made challenging without proper equipment. We made do with .22 revolvers, which Jeff had on hand, rather than our deer rifles. The experience was enlightening; shooting squirrels is no easy task, especially when using a handgun, but it proved valuable for improving our marksmanship under non-ideal conditions. Final reflections from this hunting gathering yielded one noteworthy story from a desert mule deer expedition in west Texas. Despite a failure to load an adequate charge in my muzzleloader, the hunt led to the successful harvest of a remarkable deer. Missteps such as these are part of the learning curve, teaching humility and reinforcing the unpredictability of hunting. Switching gears, the current Texas duck hunting season shows potential, with recent rains fostering good habitat conditions and early teal populations arriving. Hunters are encouraged to take advantage of these favorable conditions while being mindful to procure all necessary licenses and stamps.
