For the sixth time and first since 2019, the Honolulu Police Department held its Youth Citizens Academy, a week-and-a-half-long immersive program for 25 students ages 13 to 18. The academy is designed to acquaint youth with the reality of law enforcement through interactive, supervised activities such as firearms range visits, suspect processing observations, and police vehicle operations. Participants also engaged with K-9 units and attended presentations by SWAT and other specialized units. HPD Sergeant Kim Johnson stressed the importance of experiential learning beyond classroom instruction and hopes the program serves as a gateway for future officers. The event highlights efforts to enhance community-police relations and encourage diverse recruitment pipelines. Student testimonials reflected appreciation for hands-on exposure and mentorship opportunities that deepen understanding of police duties and challenges. The program culminates in a graduation ceremony, reinforcing commitment to youth empowerment and career exploration in public safety.
