The legislation requires firearm owners to secure both handguns and long guns to prevent access by minors under 18, individuals deemed dangerous or suicidal, and those legally prohibited from gun ownership. Noncompliance carries fines ranging from $500 to $10,000 and potential negligence charges if unsafe storage leads to injury. Transport rules were also amendedcarrying more than one prohibited firearm per car occupant may trigger felony charges carrying up to 15 years imprisonment. The law further tightens rules for under18 users: guardian consent is now required for all minors, regardless of age, when handling firearms.
