On Monday, a significant security incident at Northern Valley Regional High School in Old Tappan, New Jersey, led to a lockdown initiated in response to reports of a student potentially armed with a weapon. Local law enforcement, including the Old Tappan police and a SWAT unit from the Bergen County Sheriff's Office, responded within minutes after a report emerged from a concerned student about another student possibly bringing a firearm to school. The lockdown commenced around 11:30 a.m., effectively involving multiple local law enforcement agencies for a rapid response.
Upon arrival, law enforcement conducted a thorough investigation. A K-9 unit was deployed to search the premises, which took about 90 minutes before the lockdown was lifted. Authorities confirmed that the student in question possessed a CO2 air pistol, a kind of air gun that uses compressed gas to propel projectiles, which is often used in recreational and competitive shooting.
The student was taken into custody and is facing charges related to threats and weapons offenses. Following the incident, school officials, including Old Tappan Officer in Charge Kathryn Weaver, commended the quick response of law enforcement and affirmed the school’s commitment to student safety, stating that reports must be treated seriously to ensure the well-being of the educational environment. Counseling services have been made available for students to help them cope with any anxiety or stress arising from the situation.
