✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Cairo, EgyptNew Delhi [India], November 7 (ANI): The ISSF World Championship Rifle/Pistol is set to commence in Cairo, Egypt, on Saturday, with 15 Indian shooters ready to take on the international stage. Over ten competition days, a total of 720 athletes from 71 countries will compete at Cairo's renowned Olympic Shooting Range, which has become an essential venue in the shooting calendar. On the opening day, four coveted gold medals will be contested, including events critical to the Olympic roster. The anticipation around the women's and men's 10m air rifle finals is particularly high, drawing attention not only for their competitive nature but also for their significance in the Olympic landscape. Additionally, the non-Olympic 50m pistol event will award two gold medals, making for an exciting start to the championship. India has deployed a formidable squad of 40 shooters, spread across 17 events, ensuring they are well-represented in all ten Olympic events featured in the championship. Among the Indian contingent, Rudrankksh Patil stands out, being the reigning world champion in the 10m air rifle, a title he earned in Cairo back in 2022. His experience will be invaluable as he competes against a field teeming with seasoned athletes, including Olympic champions and world record holders. Competing alongside him is Arjun Babuta, who has displayed exceptional form throughout the year, securing an individual silver at the Lima World Cup after finishing fourth at the Paris Olympics. Notably, the pressure is elevated with competitors like Chinas Sheng Lihao, an Olympic champion and world record holder, targeting his first worlds title after narrowly finishing with a bronze at the same venue three years ago. The womens event also brings together a trio of accomplished shooters: Elavenil Valarivan, currently a two-time Olympian, alongside Meghana Sajjanar and Shreya Agrawal, who are poised to challenge for medals in a qualification field featuring 121 competitors, including the formidable Korean Olympic champion Ban Hyojin. Their resilience will be tested in the upcoming 60-shot qualification round, where only the best will advance. Team coach Deepali Deshpande shared insights on the preparation, emphasizing the familiarity the squad has with the Cairo range, with many returning for multiple competitions. This has afforded the athletes the opportunity not only to acclimatize but also to train intensively, ensuring they are in peak form for this prestigious event. The added advantage of positive weather conditions further enhances their readiness. In the other preliminary events, Indian athletes will also participate in mens and womens 50m pistol competitions, featuring Kamaljeet, Ravinder Singh, and Yogesh Kumar in the men's category, while the women's side includes Parisha, Priyanka Patel, and Sakshi Suryavanshi, all vying for gold. Another notable event is the men's 25m rapid-fire pistol, where Olympian Anish Bhanwala will compete alongside Adarsh Singh and newcomer Sameer, who faces an uphill battle against seasoned competitors. For many, the Cairo Worlds not only represent a prestigious title but also serve as a vital last opportunity to qualify for the upcoming ISSF World Cup Finals in Doha. As the buildup to these events unfolds, Indian shooting has seen a remarkable year, responded with exceptional performances culminating in multiple medals across competitions. The squad's dynamic, with several young shooters excelling on the international stage, highlights a burgeoning talent pool ready to challenge global benchmarks. While the recent ISSF World Cup results have positioned India favorably in the standings, the true test lies ahead in the competitive environment of the World Championship. The leaders of the squad are in strong form, yet the ultimate outcome remains uncertain as other nations field their elite shooters. In 2022, India finished second overall at these championships, a benchmark they hope to surpass this year. With potential for additional qualifiers for the World Cup Finals, the stakes are high, and the coming days in Cairo promise to deliver thrilling moments.
