📅
✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Cairo, EgyptThe International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship Rifle/Pistol is underway in Cairo, Egypt, bringing together an impressive 720 athletes from 71 member federations. This prestigious event, which kicks off with competition day one this Saturday, is set to crown four gold medalists across both Olympic and non-Olympic events. Among those competing are 15 athletes representing India, excelling not just on their national stage but also making significant marks on the international shooting scene. As the finals approach for both the mens and womens 10m air rifle competitions, anticipation builds for India's top contenders. Featured prominently in this year's lineup is Rudrankksh Patil, who made headlines last year by claiming the world champion title at this same venue. Patil, currently ranked 10th in the world, is joined by fellow Indian shooter Arjun Babuta, who placed fourth in the Paris Olympics and has recently showcased his prowess with a silver medal win in Lima. The opportunity to perform in Cairo is especially crucial for both Patil and Babuta, with their past successes in the region providing confidence as they gear up against a formidable field, which includes reigning world record holder and Olympic champion Sheng Lihao from China. The magnitude of the competition is heightened, given that many competitors, including the Chinese athletes, are poised to stake their claims for medals, leading to what some are calling a clash of the titans. The womens air rifle final also showcases Indian talent with two-time Olympian Elavenil Valarivan, Meghana Sajjanar, and rookie Shreya Agrawal, all poised to face off against some of the most talented international competitors, including the Olympic champion Ban Hyojin of Korea and promising Chinese teenagers Wang Zifei and Peng Xinlu. "Some of our shooters are making their sixth trip here," shared Deepali Deshpande, the team coach. "Our athletes arrived in Cairo in good time, trained well, and are keen to perform. The confidence we have built over past successes combined with the supportive weather conditions makes us optimistic for the events ahead." As part of the competition, the Indian squad also features Kamaljeet, Ravinder Singh, and Yogesh Kumar in the men's 50m pistol event, while Parisha, Priyanka Patel, and Sakshi Suryavanshi will look to secure medals in the womens competition on the same day. Overall, the event promises intense action not just in individual categories but also serves as a vital qualifier for the ISSF World Cup Finals scheduled for December in Doha. This year has seen promising performances from various Indian shooters. Notably, teenager Suruchi has already carved a niche by dominating womens 10m air pistol events at the ISSF World Cups, highlighting India's rise in the global shooting arena. The last chance for many shooters to qualify, the Cairo Worlds could potentially increase Indias representation in the upcoming World Cup Finals from nine to even higher. India's performance has been remarkable not just at higher-tier competitions but across multiple international platforms, resulting in an impressive tally of medals and records throughout the year. As the competition unfolds at the Cairo World Championship, Indian athletes aim to capitalize on the momentum built from past successes and significant individual performances at both junior and senior levels. Overall, the shooting community is eager to see how well the India squad can do against such stiff global competition, and the implications could reverberate beyond just medals, potentially shaping future strategies for training and development within the countrys shooting programs.
