In a recent meeting, the Watertown School Board approved several contract recommendations that significantly enhance extracurricular activities at Lake Area Technical College (LATC) in Watertown, South Dakota. Among these recommendations is the decision to hire an additional coach for the competitive trap shooting team, increasing the number of coaching staff to four due to the burgeoning interest in the sport. Vice President Cam Cory highlighted the impressive participation levels in the LATC trap shooting program, which is the largest competitive activity at the college. Currently, around 55 students are actively practicing trap shooting, indicating a thriving culture and growing community around the sport. The team utilizes facilities at a local trap and skeet club located just west of Watertown, and they compete against other institutions, including notable rivals like South Dakota State University (SDSU) and Dordt University. The trap shooting program at LATC not only offers students the opportunity to develop their shooting skills but also fosters camaraderie and teamwork amongst a diverging group of individuals united in their love for the sport. The addition of a fourth coach will help accommodate the high demand for participation and provide tailored coaching to enhance performance on a competitive stage. Additionally, in response to student requests, the Watertown School Board has also established a new chorus program at LATC. The chorus program is currently active and has garnered interest from about a dozen students. They have already scheduled multiple performances, which include appearances during the holiday season, at the Festival of Trees, and at upcoming graduation ceremonies. This not only enriches the overall educational experience for students but also highlights the colleges commitment to providing a diverse range of extracurricular activities. The move to expand both the competitive trap shooting and music programs demonstrates LATCs dedication to fostering a well-rounded environment for its students, ensuring that they can pursue their passions both on the field and in the arts. By integrating academic pursuits with athletics and the arts, LATC is setting a beaming example of how educational institutions can adapt to student interests and provide enriched learning experiences. Rising participation in competitive shooting is not just limited to LATC; it reflects a broader trend across the nation as shooting sports continue to gain popularity among youth. According to various reports, both youth and collegiate-level trap shooting prove to be effective in promoting responsible gun ownership and emphasize safe shooting practices. As more students engage in such programs, educational institutions play a pivotal role in ensuring that safety protocols are taught alongside competitive skills. As the LATC program grows, it could lead to increased community involvement and support for shooting sports. Local clubs and shooting ranges might see a boost in interest, while the outreach programs developed by the college could effectively educate the public on firearms safety and the culture surrounding competitive shooting. Ultimately, the success of LATC's trap shooting program could serve as a template for other colleges and educational institutions keen to embrace shooting sports as a legitimate extracurricular activity. The positive impact on student engagement, athletic performance, and community building cannot be understated.
