A former North Myrtle Beach police officer has filed a lawsuit against Sig Sauer, alleging that his M400 rifle accidentally discharged during a mass shooting response, leading to serious injuries. William Norton, who has served as a firearms instructor since 2012, claims faulty design and defects in the weapon that caused it to fire into his leg while he was assisting the marine unit. According to the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court’s Florence division, Norton was patrolling at Harbourgate Marina when the incident occurred on May 25, 2025, and he had confirmed that the safety was on prior to the discharging. Eyewitness video supports his assertion that his hands were not on the gun at the time it fired.
Following the incident, Norton experienced panic and pain as he attempted to seek cover after being struck, resulting in catastrophic injuries that require extensive treatment, including two surgeries and ongoing rehabilitation. His injuries may affect his ability to return to full duty as a police officer.
The lawsuit emphasizes the severe nature of his injuries, with his left leg sustaining a fracture that may lead to diminished capacity moving forward. The North Myrtle Beach police department also responded, misled by the incident which occurred during heightened alert due to a nearby mass shooting.
