A Rock Island Arsenal firefighter was recently sentenced in connection with a battery incident that occurred in a school parking lot in Mercer County. Tim Weller, 41, who resides in Coal Valley, was involved in a confrontation with another driver at Sherrard Elementary School. The incident escalated after Weller accused the other driver of illegally passing him in a no-passing zone and subsequently punched him after a verbal altercation. Following the scuffle, a police officer discovered a firearm, specifically a Sig Sauer P365 9mm, in Weller’s vehicle, along with a knife in his possession. Weller admitted to the police that he carried the gun in his truck, but the circumstances of the altercation led to his eventual sentencing.
Patiently navigating through the legal system, Weller was charged with aggravated battery—a felony—as well as lesser charges of battery. Ultimately, he was sentenced to 18 months of conditional discharge, which includes a prohibition against possessing firearms and undergoing anger management therapy. The encounter, caught on surveillance but unclear in its details due to camera angles, reflects ongoing concerns surrounding altercations often escalating in today’s society.
