Nieves Reyes has pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder charges following a brutal machete killing of his coworker, Eugene Allen, and for firing upon multiple Suffolk County, New York police officers during a violent armed standoff. The incident, which unfolded at Reyes's home, saw one officer shot in the face, who prosecutors stated is fortunate to be alive. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Reyes chasing the victim with a machete hours before Allen's body was discovered hidden under brush in a wooded area, showing severe chop wounds and near-complete decapitation. Officials assert that photos depict Reyes returning home covered in blood and carrying the machete after the fatal stabbing. When police surrounded his residence, police said Reyes fired five shots from inside in rapid succession, initiating a multi-hour standoff. During the confrontation, he reportedly directly targeted an emergency services officer, instead hitting an Emergency Services vehicle near where the officer was standing. A subsequent search warrant uncovered two shotguns and approximately 19 rounds of 12-gauge shotshell at his home.
