Marine Corps veteran LaKing Harris is on a new mission: helping children develop self-defense skills while fostering emotional regulation and confidence. His program, Creating a Lasting Legacy, aims to teach practical personal safety techniques alongside conflict de-escalation and healthier lifestyles. Harris, also a training officer for the Texarkana Young Marines, says he started the program in part for his own children. He stresses that avoiding a fight is often the best outcome, with techniques focused on calming situations or exiting them safely. Beyond the physical drills, Harris emphasizes the importance of taking a breath and managing emotions in high-stress moments. Retired from the Marine Corps for eight years, Harris says hes witnessed significant boosts in confidence among his young students. The program is open to area youth and incorporates martial arts principles with real-world application.
