Maryland Lawmakers Propose Expansion of Firearm Storage Requirements
Bill would mandate locked storage for all firearms in homes with minors, regardless of loaded status

✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Annapolis, MDANNAPOLIS, Md. A group of Maryland lawmakers has introduced a bill aimed at tightening the states firearm storage requirements. Under current law, gun owners must secure loaded firearms when they know or should know that a minor could gain access. The new proposal, House Bill 1342, would expand that mandate to include all firearms loaded or unloaded in any household where minors are present. Supporters argue that the legislation addresses loopholes that allow unsecured, unloaded firearms to be left within reach of children, posing significant safety risks. The proposal also includes provisions for public awareness campaigns, encouraging safe storage practices statewide. Gun rights advocates have voiced concerns that the bill could criminalize responsible gun owners for storage oversights, even when no harm occurs. They also warn that overly broad storage laws may interfere with the ability to quickly access firearms for self-defense. The measure will be debated in the upcoming legislative session and, if passed, would take effect on October 1, 2026.
