Minnesota Supreme Court Confirms Ghost Guns Legal Under Current State Law

In a landmark ruling, the Minnesota Supreme Court has upheld that ghost gunsprivately made firearms without serial numbersare not illegal under current state law. The 2022 case involved a trooper finding a 9mm Glock-style ghost gun after a traffic incident in Fridley. Charges against the driver were initially dismissed, reinstated by the appeals court, and ultimately dismissed again by the Supreme Court. The court said Minnesota statutes relied too heavily on vague federal interpretations, and that lawmakersnot prosecutorsmust define prohibitions. A bill to explicitly ban ghost guns failed in 2023.
