The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission designates this weekend as the "Super Bowl" of hunting. With Veterans Day approaching next week, many hunters are expected to take advantage of a lengthy four-day weekend to participate in this traditional event. As noted by Randy Zellers, a spokesperson for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, the modern gun season is a significant occasion for both seasoned and novice hunters alike. "Modern gun, thats the traditional thats kind of our Super Bowl. Thats the big deal. Everyone gets involved in that," Zellers stated. Traditionally, opening weekend sees over 30,000 deer harvested, and the commission anticipates this year will surpass previous records based on increasing participation and favorable conditions. Local hunter Jeff Cathie shared his deep-rooted family traditions associated with hunting, which has been a consistent practice for his family for approximately 50 years. "Weve been hunting down there for about 50 years, my grandpa, anyways, and then my dad, and now me," Cathie reflected on the generational ties that outdoor traditions foster. "Get out there before daylight, stay till about 10, go back, take a nap, refuel, go back out until dark," he outlined his laid-back strategy for the weekend. While some hunters are fixated on bagging a trophy buck, Cathie enjoys the camaraderie associated with the outing. "Im not really looking for anything thats a super trophy. Just having a good time with my grandpa and all the members at my deer camp," he explained, emphasizing the community aspect of hunting. Cathie's humor about hunting experiencesincluding his grandpa taking the shots for him last yearillustrates the light-hearted spirit that accompanies these shared activities. Hunting in Arkansas isn't just about the chase; it plays a vital role in wildlife management. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission points out that hunting is essential for maintaining a balanced deer population, ensuring the ecosystem remains healthy and sustainable. As Zellers clarified, "Hunting is the way that were able to balance and make sure that deer herd is healthy and vibrant, and stays around for years to come." This perspective highlights the importance of hunting not only for sport but also for conservation efforts. As this modern gun season gears up, favorable weather conditions are also on hunters minds. Early reports suggest that cooler temperatures are expected this weekend, which may boost deer activity as the rutting season begins. "When its hot like this, you might not see a whole lot," Cathie noted, while expressing his hope for ideal conditions on opening day. With these anticipated changes, Monday promises to be an excellent day for hunting, as the deer are more likely to be active. The excitement surrounding this hunting season underscores the significance of traditions in Arkansas culture, where family ties and community spirit intertwine with outdoor activities. With participation expected to rise, this weekend could shape the landscape of deer hunting in the state for years to come.
