The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission describes this weekend as the "Super Bowl" of hunting, and they expect hunters to take long weekends with Veterans Day falling on Tuesday. According to Randy Zellers of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, modern gun hunting is crucial for maintaining the health and vibrancy of the state's deer population. "Modern gun, thats the traditional thats kind of our Super Bowl. Thats the big deal. Everyone gets involved in that," said Zellers. Typically, more than 30,000 deer are harvested during opening weekend alone, and they expect that number to rise this year. Jeff Cathie, a longtime hunter, shared his family's generational tradition of deer hunting. "Weve been hunting down there for about 50 years, my grandpa, anyways, and then my dad, and now me, Cathie noted. His strategy for the weekend is straightforward: "Get out there before daylight, stay till about 10, go back, take a nap, refuel, go back out until dark," he explained. While some hunters are in pursuit of the trophy buck, Cathie prioritizes the experience of spending time with his family over bagging a big catch. "Im not really looking for anything thats a super trophy. Just having a good time with my grandpa and all the members at my deer camp, he added with a laugh, recounting how last season, his grandfather took all the shots for him. "If I get one, its great. Last year, my grandpa shot both of mine. Hunting, as Zellers emphasized, isnt just a pastime; it plays an essential role in wildlife management. "Hunting is the way that were able to balance and make sure that deer herds stay around for years to come, he said. With cooler weather expected this weekend, Cathie remains hopeful that those conditions will bring more deer movement in the state. "When its hot like this, you might not see a whole lot, but Mondays going to be a really good day. Its going to be cold, and the ruts just starting up so theyre starting to move, he added. This year, with the modern gun season coinciding with Veterans Day, the excitement is palpable among local hunters. Many are taking advantage of the four-day weekend to immerse themselves fully in the experience, which emphasizes not only hunting skills but also camaraderie and tradition. In Arkansas, the modern gun deer season is significant, merging family traditions with the responsibilities of wildlife conservation and population control. As countless families participate in this cherished ritual, its vital to recognize the broader societal and ecological roles hunting fulfills in the state. The anticipation surrounding this weekend underscores a cultural appreciation for hunting that transcends mere sport; it embodies a connection to heritage and nature. As seasoned hunters like Cathie prepare to engage with their longstanding traditions, new generations are introduced to the skills and ethics that accompany the sport, promoting a sustainable approach to wildlife management and community bonding. As we dive into the weekend, remember that hunting season is more than just about the harvest; it's a celebration of heritage, family, and respect for wildlife.
