Following a collaborative investigation between the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) and the New Bedford Police Department, a 36-year-old man named Steven Ellis was arraigned in Fall River Superior Court. This resulted from a search operation in New Bedford, where law enforcement seized a substantial quantity of controlled substances, firearms, and ammunition. The operation was part of an investigation into the illegal possession and distribution of narcotics.
On April 2nd, detectives executed search warrants at Ellis's home and an associated garage. In his residence, police discovered not only drugs but also three firearms registered under his girlfriend’s name. Notably, Ellis lacked both a License to Carry and a Firearm Identification Card, leading authorities to suspend the girlfriend's carry license.
The search of the garage yielded further concerning findings: a Marlin .22 caliber rifle, a Springfield shotgun, a Remington shotgun, a Polymer80 ghost gun, and a .22 caliber pistol bearing a defaced serial number. Additionally, investigators found a Taser, illegal drugs including 16.9 grams of cocaine and 55 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, along with high-capacity magazines.
Subsequently, Ellis was charged with multiple offenses, which include two counts of possession with intent to distribute a Class B drug, six counts of carrying a firearm without a proper license, and other significant charges involving controlled substances and firearm violations. Court records indicate that he had previously pled not guilty during proceedings in District Court and was subsequently held without bail due to the seriousness of the charges.
In a courtroom appearance on Friday, Ellis again pled not guilty. He is currently held without bail while awaiting a dangerousness hearing, scheduled for July 2nd. The court's decisions reflect the stringent stance taken by authorities towards firearm violations, particularly in Massachusetts, which has some of the nation’s strictest gun laws.
