The New Mexico State Fair Commission announced on August 7, 2025, that it will expand firearm-free zones at this years event, citing public safety concerns and coordination with law enforcement. The new policy prohibits the possession of firearms both open and concealed carry in all buildings, arenas, and the midway, with exceptions for on-duty law enforcement. Fair organizers say the decision follows incidents at fairs in neighboring states involving negligent discharges and altercations. Gun rights organizations, including the New Mexico Shooting Sports Association, have criticized the move as a violation of the states constitutional right to bear arms and the Second Amendment.
