The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has announced a statewide initiative to integrate firearm safety training into public school health and safety courses. Starting in the 20252026 academic year, students in middle and high school will receive instruction on safe firearm handling, storage, and accident prevention. The curriculum, developed in partnership with law enforcement agencies and safety organizations, will include interactive presentations, videos, and optional live demonstrations with inert training firearms. Officials emphasize that the program is not about teaching students to shoot but about preventing accidents and promoting responsible behavior. Supporters say the program fills an important gap in safety education, while some parents have expressed concern about discussing firearms in a school setting.
