In March 2026, the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina reported a significant increase in calls for service, with deputies responding to 3,757 cases, a rise from 3,226 in February and 3,133 in January. Alongside this surge in activity, there were 291 incident reports and 157 arrests—a notable increase compared to previous months. The average jail population also escalated to 190 inmates in March, reflecting a monthly rise in arrests.
Firearm permit activity has been a noteworthy aspect of this increase, with the sheriff’s office issuing 168 concealed carry permits in March alone. This figure marks an increase from 118 permits issued the previous month. North Carolina honors concealed carry permits from various states, following a “shall-issue” system that simplifies permit acceptance for visitors from outside the state. However, individuals carrying concealed in North Carolina must adhere to specific state laws governing concealed carry locations.
Currently, proposed legislation such as Senate Bill 50, which sought to allow permitless concealed carry, has not yet passed into law, leaving the requirement for valid permits intact. Simultaneously, open carry remains permissible without a permit for North Carolinians aged 18 and older. Narcotics seizures in March showed a marked rise as well, with the seizure of over 18 kilograms of marijuana and several other narcotics, including significant quantities of methamphetamine. Additionally, 22 firearms were confiscated during narcotics operations.
The overall workload of the sheriff's office saw 619 papers served in March—a rise from 592 in February. The sheriff's office emphasizes that all figures may be subject to revision as more data becomes available.
