The Oklahoma Supreme Court has agreed to hear a challenge to the states permitless carry law, which allows eligible residents to carry firearms openly or concealed without a license. The lawsuit, filed by a coalition of gun control advocates and several municipalities, argues that the 2019 law violates provisions of the Oklahoma Constitution and undermines public safety. Supporters of the law, often referred to as constitutional carry, maintain that it aligns with the Second Amendment and ensures that law-abiding citizens are not burdened by bureaucratic licensing requirements. State Attorney General Gentner Drummond has pledged to defend the statute, citing its consistency with similar laws in more than half of U.S. states. Oral arguments are expected this fall, with the courts decision likely to set an important precedent for other states facing legal challenges to permitless carry.
