(WLUC) - As rifle deer hunting season is set to begin this Saturday, hunters across the region are finalizing their preparations for what is often one of the most anticipated times of the year. With the excitement building, outdoor professionals are emphasizing the importance of safety and readiness to ensure a successful hunt. Ishpeming native Ryan Pizziola, a seasoned deer hunter and manager at Wilderness Sports, highlights that proper safety practices are critical for both new and experienced hunters. "Every year, we have people who come who have just gotten into deer hunting or got into firearms, and we go through the basics with them, making sure they feel comfortable because thats number one," Pizziola states. An essential step in ensuring a successful deer hunt is properly sighting in ones firearm. Pizziola explains, "It can make the difference between hitting and missing that perfect shot. Scopes can go bad; guns get bumped, dropped, or banged around. Before rifle season, it's essential to shoot your firearm and inspect it so that you know youre on target and your equipment is performing at its peak." The significance of preparation extends beyond just the mechanical state of the firearm. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reporting favorable conditions that could enhance hunting success this season. DNR wildlife biologist Brian Roell noted that snowfall in various regions could increase deer activity. Roell explained, "Snow typically means deer are more active, and with the cold weather, lots of deer are on the move looking for food and shelter." As the season opens, it is important for hunters to consider safety tips before heading out. Roell advises that hunters should dress appropriately for the weather, inform someone about their hunting location and estimated return time, and ensure they wear their hunter orange gear for visibility. "These precautions are necessary; if youre overdue, it can take time for someone to know to look for you," Roell added, emphasizing the need for safety in the field. With the combination of good snow cover and heightened deer activity, this season could present numerous opportunities for hunters. It's critical to approach the season not just with excitement but with full preparation and attention to safety. Having the right gear and knowing how to use it effectively can not only lead to a successful hunt but ensure that everyone returns safely at the end of the day.
