✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Marquette County, MichiganMARQUETTE COUNTY, Mich. (WLUC) - As rifle deer hunting season is set to begin Saturday, many hunters across the region are preparing to venture into the outdoors once again. With the excitement surrounding the season, hunting professionals emphasize the importance of preparation and safety. Ishpeming native Ryan Pizziola, a longtime deer hunter and manager at Wilderness Sports, shared valuable advice that every hunter should take into consideration before heading out into the woods. "Practicing proper safety is key," Pizziola remarked. He noted the necessity of sighting a gun prior to the start of the hunting season. "Scopes go bad, guns get bumped, and they get dropped and they get banged around. Its crucial to shoot your firearm before rifle season and inspect it to make sure youre on target and your equipment is performing at its peak." Pizziola also enjoys teaching new hunters the basics of the sport. "Every year, we have people who are new to deer hunting or firearms. I make it a point to ensure that they feel comfortable before heading into the field, because thats the number one priority," he explained. Proper training and knowledge can significantly increase a novice's chances of success during the hunting season. In addition to safety measures, hunters often wonder about their odds heading into the season. According to Brian Roell, a wildlife biologist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), this years snowfall may provide a beneficial boost to deer activity. "Snow typically increases deer activity, and the cold weather means that bucks are working harder to find food and shelter." Roell noted that while recent snowfalls may not have covered all regions extensively, its presence in specific areas, such as near AAA Road 510, could encourage deer movement earlier than anticipated. This information could serve as a vital piece of advice for hunters planning their trips. Before heading into the woods, Roell urges hunters to take additional safety precautions. "Dress for the weather and let someone know where youll be and when you expect to return. If youre overdue, its beneficial for someone to know your location. And, of course, remember your hunter orange!" These safety reminders are essential for maximizing enjoyment and minimizing risk during hunting excursions. As the rifle deer hunting season approaches, excitement builds within the community. The Michigan DNR reports a promising outlook with signs of plenty of deer activity noticed in the lead-up to the season. Hunters are hopeful for a successful season filled with camaraderie and perhaps a few trophy bucks. As we prepare for what many consider the highlight of the outdoor sports calendar, the need for education, safety, and community support stands out. While this years conditions look favorable, wise hunters will ensure their gear is ready and their skills are sharp. Further underscoring the importance of community, those new to the sport have a range of resources available to help them feel confident and knowledgeable on the field. As winter sports also draw near, the excitement surrounding outdoor activities is further ignited as communities gather to engage in nature.
