A latenight pursuit by the Pinal County Sheriffs Office (PCSO) on July17 concluded in a chaotic exchange of gunfire on HuntHighway near BellaVista Road in SanTanValley, Arizona. Investigators say the incident began around 8:40p.m. MST when a PCSO sergeant attempted to stop a silver Chevy Tahoe flagged as stolen out of Mesa. The driver, later identified as 27yearold Antonio DelToro, allegedly accelerated to nearly 90mph, weaving through residential traffic and running multiple red lights. Deputies deployed spike strips that shredded two tires, but DelToro continued another mile before losing control and striking a utility pole. The impact disabled the SUV and ignited a small roadside brush fire. According to bodycamera footage reviewed by FOX10, DelToro exited with a Glockpattern handgun and opened fire while stumbling from the wreckage. Two deputies and a civilian reserve officer returned approximately a dozen rounds. DelToro was struck twice in the torso and pronounced dead at the scene by Rural/Metro Fire paramedics. A 34yearold PCSO deputy sustained a throughandthrough bullet wound to his left thigh; he was transported to Banner Ironwood Medical Center and is listed in stable condition after surgery. Investigators recovered DelToros pistol, a 15round magazine, and spent casings matching the deputy service weapons. Early toxicology indicated methamphetamine in the suspects system, and detectives discovered an outstanding felony warrant for aggravated assault. PCSO Sheriff Mark Lamb praised the swift medical aid rendered by fellow deputies, noting that a tourniquet likely saved the wounded officers life. The sheriff also emphasized renewed training on vehicle interdictions, citing a 27percent uptick in pursuitrelated shootings across Arizona in the past year. The Maricopa County Attorneys Office will review the shooting under standard protocol. The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave pending that investigation.
