✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Rapho Township, PennsylvaniaIn recent years, the topic of church security has risen to prominence, with tragic events heightening the awareness of many congregations across the nation. One striking reminder of this necessity occurred in September when a gunman attacked a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Michigan, resulting in the tragic loss of four lives and injuries to eight others. The reality is that while such incidents may be rare, they have propelled church leaders to consider security measures proactively. This evolution is on display with Michael Vastyan, a deacon at East Fairview Church in Rapho Township, Pennsylvania. Vastyan has dedicated five years to forming a security group within his church community of around 250 individuals. He emphasizes that the goal is not to create a police presence but to foster situational awareness among congregants. "A church security group is merely to be attentive. Whos coming in the door? Whats happening in the parking lot?" Vastyan notes. This awareness allows congregants to remain vigilant while preserving the sanctity and openness of the church environment. The Central PA Church Safety & Security Alliance, an organization Vastyan has established, offers a free seminar that aims to equip other houses of worship with knowledge on developing their own security measures. Slated for Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m., more than 100 individuals had already registered by midweek, pointing to a keen interest in the community. Seminar attendees will learn about formulating emergency action plans, understanding situational threats, and implementing preventive measures without directly involving firearms, which Vastyan downplays despite it being facilitated by a firearms training organization. Atkins, a certified National Rifle Association firearms instructor and an Army veteran, will lead the seminar focusing on teaching situational awareness rather than the use of weapons. He emphasizes the importance of establishing a video surveillance system and other preparatory measures to identify and mitigate threats effectively. Vastyan reinforces that church security planning encompasses much more than anticipating an armed intruder. It involves CPR training, AED protocols, and navigating high-stakes emotional scenarios that might arise within the congregation, such as domestic strife or health crises. Moreover, Vastyans group is proactive in mapping the church premises, numbering doors, and streamlining communication with first responders to further enhance safety protocols. This meticulous planning can prove vital in urgent situations, offering both congregants and emergency services a clear understanding of the building layout in potentially critical moments. While Rapho Township has not confronted serious security issues to date, Vastyan believes that the initiative he and his team have implemented can serve as a deterrent to future problematic incidents. His journey into church security began after exposure to training programs in Arkansas, which highlighted the need for preparedness even in spiritual environments. Since then, he has cultivated the Central PA Church Safety & Security Alliance as a nonprofit aimed at partnering with local churches to improve their safety infrastructure. As the seminar day approaches, community anticipation builds around the prospect of learning valuable skills and insights that can safeguard church congregants. Discussions surrounding church safety resonate broadly, considering the widespread impact of firearms-related incidents in public spaces, including places of worship. In this evolving landscape where maintaining a balance between safety and the essence of community interaction is crucial, the efforts led by leaders like Vastyan are essential.
