The ISSF World Championship Rifle/Pistol held in Cairo, Egypt, from November 6 to 18, 2025, kicked off with significant achievements for the Indian shooting team. On the very first day of competition, Ravinder Singh emerged victorious, clinching gold in the men's 50m pistol event. This victory marked an exceptional beginning for the Indian contingent at the championships, which are among the most prestigious events in the international shooting sports calendar. In the mens free pistol category, Ravinder shot an impressive score of 569, outpacing a field of 47 competitors. His performance was not only commendable but also pivotal, as he led the Indian team to a silver medal finish in the team event, alongside teammates Kamaljeet and Yogesh Kumar, who placed 20th and 24th with scores of 540 and 537, respectively. Adding to Indias medal tally, Elavenil Valarivan, a two-time Olympian and Asian Champion, secured a bronze in stunning fashion in the women's 10m air rifle competition. Competing fiercely against the reigning Olympic champion and world titleholder, Ban Hyojin of Korea, Elavenil showcased her skills throughout the qualification rounds, scoring a remarkable 633.4 to earn her spot in the finals. The competition was fierce, with the top qualification score going to China's Han Jiayu at 635.1. During the final event, Elavenil demonstrated exceptional composure and tactical prowess. After starting strong and moving into a joint lead with Ban, she faced intense pressure as the competition tightened. Despite dropping to third place momentarily after a less-than-optimal 10.0 on her 19th shot, she reclaimed her footing with a final shot of 10.6, securing her first individual worlds medal. In addition to her bronze medal, Elavenil went on to contribute to another team medal, winning bronze in the women's 10m air rifle team event alongside Meghana Sajjanar and Shreya Agrawal. The qualifiers also brought notable performances from other Indian shooters. Anish in the mens 25m rapid-fire pistol qualified with a solid 291 in his first stage, generating anticipation for the second stage, where the top six will advance to the medal round. Meanwhile, Priyanka Patel finished sixth in the women's 50m pistol with a score of 533. As the championships progress, the men's 10m air rifle final will feature Arjun Babuta, who has been performing well, aiming to secure his place among the elite eight. The outcomes from this opening day not only set the tone for the proceedings but also highlight the growing competitive spirit and capability of Indian shooters on the international stage. With several competitions still to come, expectations are high for further successes, not only for individual athletes but also for the team as a whole. As the world of shooting sports evolves, events like these showcase not just talent but also the relentless preparation and resilience of the athletes involved. The ISSF World Championship serves as a critical platform for nations to assess their standing against formidable international competitors and to glean insights for future training methodologies.
