Ruger American Rifle Gen II Review: Budget-Friendly Accuracy Upgrade
Second-generation bolt-action brings better ergonomics, fluted barrel, and sub-MOA precision
📅
✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Newport, NHThe Ruger American Rifle Gen II retains its place in the budget bolt-action market while introducing key refinements. Tested in 7mm PRC, the Gen II features a 20-inch spiral-fluted cold-hammer-forged barrel, threaded 5/8x24 with a muzzle brake, and a Gun Metal Gray Cerakote finish. The rifle keeps the Americans three-lug bolt and Power Bedding system but adds a three-position tang safety and a more textured polymer Monte Carlo stock with adjustable length of pull and comb height (spacers sold separately). Range results showed standout accuracy: five-shot groups averaged 0.87 inches at 100 yards, with a best group of 0.49 inches using Federal Premium ELD-X ammunition. The rifles weight (6.5 lbs.) and improved interface make it comfortable for both hunting and long-range target shooting. MSRP is $729. While the blade safety in the trigger drew mild criticism, the overall packageespecially the optics-friendly design and light handlingpositions the Gen II as a strong option for hunters seeking a factory rifle capable of precision performance without a premium price.
