On July 27, 2025, the San Diego County Sheriffs Office hosted a gun safety event at Encinitas City Hall that resulted in the collection of 226 firearmsincluding handguns, rifles, shotguns, and assaultstyle weapons. Participants turning in standard firearms received a $100 gift card while assault weapons yielded $200. Free cable locks were also distributed. The collected weapons will be processed for crime linkage and theft history; those identified as stolen will prompt owner notification, and all remaining arms will be destroyed per legal protocols. The event involved San Diego County DA investigators along with Carlsbad and Oceanside police. This collaborative operation demonstrates proactive community policing and risk mitigation.
