Savage Axis 2 Pro: The Hottest New ‘Budget’ Hunter?
📅
✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Midwest, USAMeet the Axis 2 Pro, a striking departure from the standard budget-friendly black synthetic Axis rifles that have previously defined the market. This new model showcases a redesigned, ergonomically advanced synthetic stock complete with a vertical pistol grip, ambidextrous palm swells, and modern texturing that enhances user comfort during extended hunting sessions.
Significantly upgraded, the Axis 2 Pro features improvements such as an enhanced bolt handle and durable metalwork coated in a striking Gun Metal Bronze Cerakote finish. Also included is a 0-MOA Picatinny rail, inset sling studs, a threaded muzzle, and Savage's user-adjustable AccuTrigger. The rifle retains other familiar Savage components, including a detachable magazine and thread-in headspacing for easier adjustments and maintenance.
Currently, five production versions of the Axis are available, with the 2 Pro positioned as the premium offering. The standard pricing for the rifles is as follows:
Notably, the 2 Pro series offers three finish combinations, combining the Gun Metal Bronze Cerakote with attractive camouflage stock patterns—Savage Woodland, Savage Western, or Forest SP camouflage. Furthermore, it's available in Compact and Left-Handed variants, making it a versatile option for various shooters.
The rifle is chambered in a variety of calibers, including .223 Rem, .22-250 Rem, .243 Win, 6mm ARC, .25-06 Rem, 6.5 Creed, 7mm-08 Rem, .308 Win, .270 Win, .30-06 Sprg, .350 Legend, and .400 Legend—though it excludes more common magnum choices.
In testing, we examined the .25-06 version of the Axis 2 Pro, which features a 20-inch heavy sporter threaded barrel, made from carbon steel. The rifle's exterior spiral fluting, combined with the Cerakote finish, not only enhances aesthetics but also contributes to improved durability and thermal performance. As suppressor utilization increases, the 5/8x24 threading makes suppressed shooting easy and effective. The dropbox magazine holds four rounds of .25-06, providing reliable capacity for hunting scenarios.
Accuracy testing revealed that the Axis 2 Pro lives up to its promises, providing sub-MOA groups when paired with quality ammunition. We used a range of loads, including options from DoubleTap, Nosler, Remington, Federal Premium, and Hornady. Regardless of whether we were shooting suppressed or not, the Axis 2 Pro’s performance stood out. The rifle showed particular favor for the Double Tap 100-grain Lead Free and Federal Premium tipped with Sierra Game Kings, proving suitable for any hunting situation, as it exhibited consistent accuracy.
Field experience with the Axis 2 Pro was equally impressive. During a whitetail hunt in the Midwest, effective shooting resulted in harvesting a sizeable trophy buck with a single well-placed shot. The rifle’s blend of ease, functionality, and performance reinforces its claim as a superior hunting option.
Despite its many strengths, minor room for future improvements exists. While the stock boasts a modern aesthetic, it offers a fixed length of pull (LOP) of 13.75 inches, which some users may find restrictive. In comparison, Savage's higher-end 110 series provides adjustable spacers, which could elevate the Axis series even further if incorporated. It’s worth noting that the compact Axis 2 Pro variant presents an LOP of 12.75 inches, catering to those seeking smaller configurations.
Overall, the Savage Axis 2 Pro carves a space for itself in the market as a high-quality, budget-friendly option for dedicated hunters. It combines aesthetics, practical features, and impressive accuracy to deliver a compelling experience, further enhanced by a diverse array of chambering options.
The Savage Axis 2 Pro exemplifies how budget-conscious hunters don’t need to sacrifice performance for cost. With its ergonomic design and extensive chamber offerings, it opens doors for both new and seasoned hunters looking for reliability. As early reports suggest increasing interest in this model, its impact on the market is worth monitoring. What remains to be seen is how it measures against competitors in an increasingly crowded budget segment, but for those invested in the hunting community, it offers a promising avenue to explore.
