Seoul ADEX 2025: Hyundai WIA targets production of 105mm SPH
📅
✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Seoul, South KoreaSouth Korean firm Hyundai WIA is gearing up to begin production of its innovative lightweight 105mm self-propelled howitzer (SPH) which made its first public appearance at the KADEX exhibition in October 2024. This new piece of artillery marks a significant advancement in mobile firepower and has been developed in collaboration with South Koreas Defense Rapid Acquisition Technology Research Institute. The development of the 105mm SPH was completed within a tight time frame of two years and is geared towards enhancing the capabilities of light infantry brigades. Ji-Hong Lee, Senior Manager at Hyundai WIA's Defence Business Team, highlighted that mass production is set to commence by 2026-27, drawing interest from countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, and Latvia. The versatility and high mobility of the SPH make it a strategic asset for modern combat, especially in expeditionary operations where swift deployment is critical. Designed to be mounted on a Kia 44 tactical vehicle chassis, this lightweight howitzer not only serves its military purpose but can also be easily transported via CH-47 Chinook helicopters or other transport aircraft, allowing for rapid mobilization in response to unfolding combat scenarios. One of the standout capabilities of this mobile artillery system is its ability to execute 'shoot and scoot' missions. This feature is enhanced by a sophisticated fire control system that incorporates automated firing and servicing alongside fire mission data linking, facilitating quick strikes while minimizing exposure to retaliatory enemy fire. With an integrated navigation system, this artillery platform boasts improved accuracy, thereby increasing its effectiveness on the battlefield. In comparison to its towed counterpart, which previously required a heavier vehicle for transportation, the KH178 howitzer mounted on the Kia 44 weighs less than half, allowing for a reduced crew size from six to four. This streamlining not only makes operational logistics easier but also contributes to enhancing the overall responsiveness of the field artillery units utilizing it. The system comprises a fully integrated platform consisting of a gun vehicle, an ammunition carrier, and a fire command vehicle. The reduced weight and optimized design create a formidable capability for light units needing reliable and mobile fire support. The operational statistics for the upgraded KH178 105mm gun are quite impressive, achieving a maximum firing rate of ten rounds per minute and a sustained rate of three rounds. Notably, the maximum range with standard projectiles reaches 14.7 kilometers, extending to 18 kilometers when using a rocket-assisted projectile. As the global landscape evolves with the increasing emphasis on rapid-response military capabilities, the 105mm SPH by Hyundai WIA represents a significant shift towards lighter, more versatile artillery options suited for modern warfare. While the production timeline indicates a forward-thinking approach, it remains to be seen how effectively these systems will integrate into existing military frameworks within their interested nations. As artillery needs continue to evolve amidst geopolitical tensions, the innovations seen in this self-propelled howitzer could set new standards for mobile firepower in the years ahead.
