Born on September 13, 1932, in Coal City, Illinois, Vera was the beloved daughter of Raymond and Elva (Ulivi) Roach. She spent her formative years in Symerton, Illinois, and graduated from Wilmington High School in 1950. On May 17, 1952, she exchanged vows with Ronald Patrick Habing at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church, and the couple established their family home in Wilmington, where they raised their children together.
Throughout her life, Vera remained a dedicated member of Saint Rose Catholic Church, where she actively participated in the Council of Catholic Women and earned recognition as the CCW Woman of the Year. Her tireless devotion extended to the upkeep of the church, where she committed herself to cleaning and maintaining the grounds, contributing her time and efforts to ensure it remained a warm and welcoming space, particularly during the festive Christmas season.
As a wife and mother, Vera took immense pride in keeping her home immaculate. She had a knack for gardening, ensuring her home was inviting to family, friends, and visitors. Known for her particular standards, Vera instilled in her children the importance of manners and respect, leaving a legacy of values and love for her family.
Vera's legacy continues through her loving family, which includes her three children: Sue Thompson, Sandy (Bob) Adams, and James (Tina) Habing, all residents of Wilmington. Her family expanded with a son-in-law, Todd (Doreen) Soltysik of Zephyr Hill, Florida, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will forever cherish her memory. Among her grandchildren are Jeff (Kristi) Thompson, Stephanie Thompson, Chris (Katie) Thompson, Carrie (Brent) Van Duyne, Tony (Natalie) Adams, Curt (Shanta) Adams, Bryan (Taylor) Adams, Bobby Soltysik, and Brian Butcher. Her great-grandchildren include Cole (Hayleigh) Thompson, Kile Thompson, Zach Thompson (fiancé: Ashley Tippett), Aiden Thompson, and many others.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her cherished husband Ronald, daughter Sheila Soltysik, two grandsons Ronnie and Ryan, son-in-law Rick Thompson, her brother Ray Roach, and brothers and sisters-in-law Pat Habing, Charles Habing, and Jean (Richard) Skelly.
Family and friends can gather at Baskerville Funeral Home located at 700 East Kahler Road, Wilmington, on Saturday, January 3, 2026, from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM. The funeral will commence thereafter at 12:30 PM at Saint Rose Catholic Church, located at 604 South Kankakee Street in Wilmington. Reverend Sebastian Gargol will preside over the Mass of Christian Burial, with burial services to follow at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Wilmington. Preferred memorials may be given to Kuzma Care Cottage or the Saint Rose Catholic Church Bell Fund.
