The Socorro County Sheriffs Office is set to hold its first Womens Firearms Safety Class on November 13, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Socorro County Annex Building located at 198 Neel Ave. This initiative comes as a response to local women expressing a growing interest in understanding firearms in a safe and supportive environment. Sheriff Lee Armijo, who is sponsoring this free class, asserts that the program aims to empower women with the necessary knowledge to feel secure and informed about firearms. He emphasized the importance of personal safety in todays world, stating, This class is about empowering women with the knowledge they need to feel secure and informed. The two-hour session will cover vital topics such as basic safety rules, proper handling and operation of different types of firearms, and responsible ownership practices. Instructors will be available to supervise as participants handle unloaded firearms, providing a hands-on learning experience. It's noteworthy that there will be no live shooting at this event, keeping the focus purely on education and safety. Sheriff Armijo, a certified firearms instructor himself, will lead the class, ensuring that participants receive knowledgeable guidance. He reiterated, A gun is just a tool, like a hammer. Its all about safety and knowing how to use it responsibly. Feedback from such events can significantly shape future offerings. Should the event prove successful, the Sheriffs Office has expressed intentions to expand its educational outreach by offering additional courses designed for families, couples, and individuals. There is even a second phase being considered, which would include live-fire training. This progressive approach reflects a commitment to increasing firearm safety and education within the community.
