Space Force Adds to Officer Training Revamp with New Acquisition-Focused Course
Space Force Launches ‘First-of-Its-Kind’ Acquisition Training Course
📅
✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍National Harbor, MarylandIn an effort to strengthen its acquisition workforce, the U.S. Space Force has launched a groundbreaking 10-week acquisition-focused training course tailored for new procurement officers. This first-of-its-kind course provides officers with an in-depth exploration of program management, contracting, space system testing, and program execution. The program is designed to immerse officers in the complexities of space acquisitions and arms them with the skills needed to manage multi-billion-dollar space systems critical to national security. Chief of Space Operations, General B. Chance Saltzman, emphasized the importance of this initiative during a keynote address at the AFAs Air, Space & Cyber Conference. For the first time ever, were providing 100% of our officers with initial training in space operations, cyber operations, intelligence, and acquisition fundamentals before their first assignment, Saltzman stated. The course aims to integrate the skills needed for space system operations and acquisition from the outset of a Space Force officers career, ensuring they are prepared for the operational demands of the service. The new training initiative builds on the Space Forces broader effort to revamp officer training. Earlier this month, the service graduated its first cohort from a year-long Officer Training Course designed to provide new officers with foundational skills in space operations, intelligence, and cyber operations. Saltzman explained that this is a shift from the traditional model where officers were trained only in specialized fields. Now, the Space Force is aiming to develop multi-disciplinary thinkers who are capable of overseeing complex space operations and managing diverse teams. The acquisition training course itself includes modules on engineering, contracting, program management, and testing space systems, with a particular focus on the unique challenges posed by space operations. The program also brings in industry leaders and senior Space Force officials to mentor officers, ensuring they gain a practical understanding of the industry's best practices. We need to equip our acquisition officers with the tools they need to make fast, informed decisions that can affect the success of our missions, said Saltzman. This new approach aligns with our vision of rapidly delivering combat-ready space systems to our warfighters. This shift in approach also reflects the Space Forces broader efforts to streamline and modernize its acquisition processes. Space acquisition has historically been seen as a slow and bureaucratic process, but the Space Force is working to change that. The new training program is part of an ongoing effort to integrate commercial technologies more quickly into the militarys operations. The Space Force has also launched a revamped Space Force Front Door portal to engage industry partners and encourage innovation, fostering a collaborative environment to speed up the acquisition of new technologies.
